And it can be very special to show your love to your valentine with your touch. My daughter has shown me how very important the love language of touch is. She doesn’t understand all of my words, so I have to show her my love through how I touch her. Most people would be so grateful to receive a loving massage from their partner. But many people are afraid that their partner won't like it, or that they will get tired or sore from working too hard. Many people don’t know that in addition to practicing massage, I love to teach massage! So, for a valentine’s day gift for you, I thought I’d share some of my favorite tips. B</span>efore you start the massage, slow yourself down and clear your mind with some deep breaths. Feel the love that you have for your partner in your heart and imagine that love flowing out past your shoulders, into your arms and hands and fingers. Slowly bring your hands to make contact with your loved one, and feel this love pour through each stroke and hold and caress.<span style="font-size: inherit;"> Try using the massage as an opportunity for you to relax and meditate. It might be almost as relaxing and enjoyable for you to give a massage as it will be for your partner to receive it! And the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your partner will be because they will resonate with your state of being... so let go of the nervousness, and follow your intuition. </span></div>

If your partner is smaller than you, you may have a tendency to use very light pressure. This is okay to a point (you probably won’t hurt anyone), but can be a little uncomfortable if your partner is tense or sore or, even worse, ticklish. On the other side are the people who come from the “no pain, no gain” school of massage. Don’t buy into this myth! Massage should be pleasant. If your partner has to tense their muscles and clench their jaw in order to get through your massage, it’s not helping.</span></div>

You don’t need to be an anatomist to recognize the ones that stick out, like knees, elbows, ribs, and spines. With little padding between them and the skin, these areas can be quick to bruise or feel painful. If you find your hands arriving at one of these bony landmarks (yes, that’s actually what massage therapists call them, it’s like reading a topographical map), you have two options: turn around and go back the way you came, or skim over them using gentle pressure and keep going with your massage on the other side.</span></div>

If you are hunched over, if your wrists are bent at an awkward angle, if you are using your thumbs or fingers in ways they weren’t designed to work, you will end up regretting the day you ever offered to give a massage. Use the weight of your body to provide pressure instead of your arms, and your arms, fingers, or thumbs. When you move to a new part of your partner’s body, adjust your entire position, not just your hand placement. </span></div>

But it’s especially true in a situation like a massage, where one of you is more vulnerable than the other. As the massage giver, it’s important that you check in regularly: How does this feel? Would you like more or less pressure? The same goes for communicating your own needs. If you are getting tired, or thirsty, or really need to leave for work, say something. Don’t leave your partner feeling guilty about enjoying a massage because you made a unilateral decision to sacrifice your needs for theirs.</span></div>

Do you want to feel more grateful in your life? I invite you try something new as <span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">you enter into the holiday season... I call it <strong>"Greet Grief and Grow Gratitude."</strong> It can be so tempting for us to jump right into holiday cheer, gratitude, and giving gifts, and get so busy with the holidays that we forget to take care of ourselves. This year, make a different choice. Take some time to acknowledge the <strong>parts of you that aren't quite ready for the joy of the season</strong>. There is so much to be acknowledged and greeted within our human experience, and if we don't acknowledge the hard or painful aspects of our experience, <strong>we can become tight, hardened, stuck, stressed, and closed-off</strong>. I have found that in my experience, if I take the time to acknowledge the things that I have lost, and that I am grieving, that it creates the <strong>opportunity for gratitude to grow</strong>. </span></div>

Many people have experienced personal losses this year, whether we lost a loved one, our health declined, or due to aging, we have lost some freedom or mobility. Some of us experienced financial losses, or lost of community after moving to a new location. And <strong>many of us </strong><span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;"><strong>are getting more acquainted with loss</strong> in our culture these days as it is becoming harder to ignore environmental losses, political discord, lost feelings of safety and belonging with increasing violence and hate crimes. </span></div>

<span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">We are so conditioned to think that we need to be strong and muscle through our sadness </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.6667px;">to find happiness.</span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"> But I have found that if grief and loss is not expressed or greeted with compassion by another human being or community, we can experience a </span><strong style="font-size: 11pt;">hardening in the body which creates tension, pain</strong><span style="font-size: 11pt;">, depression, and even rage. We also then can have a heavy </span><strong style="font-size: 11pt;">heart that is not open to the joys of life</strong><span style="font-size: 11pt;"> because of the heaviness of the </span><strong style="font-size: 11pt;">unexpressed sorrow. </strong></div>

<li><span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">Take a long shower and let the sadness be released with the water.</span></li>
<li><span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">Sing a sad song until the tears surface and let them roll. </span></li>
<li><span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">Put on some music and walk or dance until you cry out loud. </span></li>
<li><span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">Write in your journal about the losses that you are feeling. </span></li>
<li><span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">Schedule some bodywork and be with all of your feelings with the loving presence of your healing arts practitioner. </span></li>
<li><span _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">Let yourself be supported by a qualified mental health practitioner if the feelings are overwhelming.</span></li>

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When I was first introduced to the concept of being grateful for everything, I thought, "How can I can be grateful for everything? Bad stuff happens in life, and I don't want it to have a bad life, so how can I be grateful for it?" </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />I have learned over the years that if I can slow down, close my eyes, and be curious and welcoming to the uncomfortable, yucky, even painful places, that there is wisdom there. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Underneath an aching neck might be a little voice that says "please don't forget to speak your truth." </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Or a sad place in my heart might show me a vision of a loved one hurting which encourages me to reach out and connect.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Or my aching back might say "can you just schedule a massage for yourself" and once I have that massage scheduled, it softens a bit. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Or the aching pain of grief... even that pain can open you up to gratitude for the love for the person who was so dear to your heart... and to the miracle of life itself.</span> </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There might be a strong part that speaks up with resistance about not wanting to sit with these painful places... and you can welcome that part too... and eventually find gratitude for it too! If you didn't experience pain, your body would have no way to communicate with you that something is wrong... </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">And almost 100% of the time, I find that after I sit with these places, I feel grateful. I feel grateful that these parts came into my awareness and for the spaciousness that I feel once the part that is resisting these feelings has relaxed. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When I am practicing being grateful for everything, it is easier for me to find gratitude for my relatives that I might have normally gotten irritated with. I have more spaciousness in my being for myself, which means that I have more spaciousness in my being for others to be as they are. </span><br />

move in. For example, you might want to let go of stress so you might
be tempted to breathe OUT "stress" and breathe IN "calm". But when you
hear the word "stress" your mind might start to think about what is
causing your stress and move in that direction. </span></div>

life was more simple, and you might hear "serene." So then you breathe

Gratitude Journaling<br />
<br />
Wouldn't it be great if every day you could wake up giving thanks for
everything you have? And from that place of fullness you could reflect
on what you would like to offer? I have a practice that helps me stay
in that place of gratitude. It's a <b>gratitude journaling! </b><br />
<br />
I used to have a little book that I would write in each day, but since I travel so much (yes, I still offer bodywork in Denver, Boulder, and Chicago), I <b>send myself an email</b> every night writing down at least one thing that I
am grateful for from my day. Sometimes my list goes on and I list five
things, and sometimes it's just one simple thing. Here are some
examples:<br />
<br />
"I'm grateful for the smile on my neighbors face when I loaned her my drill."<br />
<br />
"I loved hearing my massage client snore on the table!"<br />
"My stomach hurts from laughing so hard with my nephew!"<br />
<br />
"I loved the feeling of my hands running through the soft fur on my friend's dog."<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And even if<b> something "bad" happens</b> during my day, I try to think of <b>something I can be grateful for</b>... for example:<br />
<br />
<br />
"I'm thankful that my flat tire got repaired in time for me to get to work just a little late!"<br />
<br />
or<br />
<br />"I'm grateful that my overdraft protection prevented me from having a bigger fine from my bank today."<br />
<br />
Still can't find something to be grateful for? Try answering some of these questions:<br />
<br />

<li>Who do I appreciate?</li>
<li>How am I fortunate?</li>
<li>What relationships am I thankful for?</li>
<li>What am I able to offer others that I am grateful for? </li>
</ol>
And I have found that when I focus on looking for something to be grateful for during my day instead of what was "missing", my happiness expands, and I am more satisfied with my life! I hope you enjoy gratitude journaling or emailing... let me know if you notice your stress levels going down!<br />

their lives, and I am discovering how powerful mindfulness can be during
a bodywork session. Mindfulness is a wonderful tool for our day to day
existence, helping us to stay present to every moment, rather than
cutting off some aspects of our experience. It can bring more peace
and self-understanding into our day-to-day existence, by staying away
from the usual habit of trying to avoid emotional distress, pain, or
tension and trying to make things different than they are.<br />
<br />
When
receiving massage and bodywork, most people have an idea about
something that they would like to change. Maybe it's a bad mood, maybe
its a tight shoulder or a painful back, but we want it to go away. I
have found that if we take some time to slow down and listen, our body
often has a message for us. Some examples of what your body might say
to you is: "I'd really like to have a do nothing day" or "I need to tell
my boss that I'm feeling overwhelmed" or "I'm really sad about my
family member being sick." And it can be really helpful to "unpack"
these feelings, and observe them, let them know that you hear them /
feel them / see them, and then come back to the feeling of the weight
body on the massage table, the touch of my hand with your body, or your
breath. If you just make the sensation go away, you might miss out on
some important messages. <br />
<br />
<br />
Here is an example of how the inner dialogue or experience can be:<br />
<br />
I'm laying on the massage table...<br />
I'm relaxing...<br />
I'm breathing...<br />
I'm letting the weight of my body sink into the support under me...<br />
I'm feeling a painful place in my body...<br />
I'm experiencing the sensation as it is...<br />

I'm inviting this place to speak to me from it's own perspective...<br />
I'm thanking it for sharing with me...<br />
I'm invite it to let me know if there is something more...<br />
I'm noticing it is relaxing on its own... <br />
I'm lovingly inviting it to let go, relax, soften...<br />
I'm breathing into that place...<br />
I'm noticing that place feels different now... <br />
I'm grateful for my body...<br />

and often the sensation goes away on it's own!<br />

It
can be difficult to have this much awareness on your own, and that's
where a mindful practitioner can help with some active listening and
"focusing" dialogue work. Your practitioner can support you in staying
present and really listening with compassion, with gentle touch, helping
you to "stay with" and witness your inner experience instead of pushing
it away or going for an emotional roller coaster ride with it. If you
would like some support with mindfulness, I would be happy to be a
companion to help you to focus in and <i>really</i> listen to the
messages that your
body might be telling you. And hopefully when your body has a message
for you five days later when you are walking down the street, you can
listen with compassion, instead of just telling it to go away. <br />

design for breast feeding, with an ornate glandular system that produces milk
from veins and arteries, and the milk is directed towards the nipple to be fed
to a baby. Unfortunately,
this design also makes breasts vulnerable to disease. <b> </b>The lymphatic system is
designed to clean toxins, viruses, abnormal cells, and bacteria out of the body. In most areas of the body, there lymph flows
along side muscles, veins and arteries which pump the fluid towards lymph nodes
which filter the lymph fluid. In breast
tissue, the lymph vessels follow the breast lobes and mammary tissue, which are
designed to flow out towards the nipple.
But the lymph nodes that clean out breast tissue are all the way back in
the chest wall and in the armpit area. So
this fluid has to flow all the way back through the breast tissue, through a
space that is behind the breast, and through the tight muscles of the chest
wall to the lymph nodes that are ready to clean out the fluid before it is
circulated back to the heart where it is pumped through the liver and kidneys
and back to the rest of the body. </span></span></span></div>

memories are stored in the body and generate core beliefs that often

I chose to study Hakomi because I feel that so many physical ailments that I see in my massage practice
are stuck in the body because of emotional and energetic holding patterns that are so
deeply engrained that the pattern comes back shortly after having a
massage, no matter how "deep" it is. So, I wanted to facilitate a deeper transformation that might help people get out out of pain, both emotionally and physically. </div>

Hakomi
sessions may involve some touch, but it will be in an experimental
context and not a in typical massage or bodywork fashion. For example,
in a Hakomi session, if someone has tight shoulders, we would explore
the sensation with mindfulness, and might soon discover that the
tightness is a way for your system to feel big enough to be able to
defend yourself. There may be memories of feeling small
that surface as the therapist places their hands on the shoulders to
slightly exaggerate the sensation. These memories will be listened to,
in the atmosphere of mindfulness and loving compassion. The tension will
often release on its own, along with emotions that might have been
stored with these memories. The end result is hopefully a new awareness
of an old way of thinking and being that is no longer needed. If the
client continues to observe their state of being, they may notice this
pattern happening in their daily life, and chose to react in a different
way. </div>

Many
people know the benefits of Swedish massage for circulation and
relaxation. But did you know that Thai massage goes much deeper than
Swedish massage can? Especially in areas of the body like the hips,
hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. It involves deep stretches that feel
like yoga stretches, as well as acupressure points that move energy
where it is stuck and create flexibility where there is stiffness. Some
points may be tender - the massage points are to take you to the edge or
the border of that sensation - but not beyond. Deep pressure is more
possible to obtain with Thai massage because you are resting on a mat on
the floor, and the therapist can use their natural body weight to lean
into your body, creating a strong sensation. This sensation shouldn't be
painful, but it can be tender, and sometimes intense. But if you learn
to direct your breath to that area and learn to relax into the sessions,
you can be transported into a relaxed state where you can release deep
tension that has been held for years. </div>
